Silage Barrier Film air resistant fodder hay wrapping

Has any one of you know barrier film? What is a barrier film? Where do you often found silage barrier film? Those who are familiar with the agricultural and farm industry might already be familiar with the name.

What Is Barrier Film?

The barrier film is a multilayer film that is specially designed to be impervious to gas migration. The main purpose of using the barrier film is to limit the exposure of OEs to water vapor and oxygen; so people can control the permeation.

Barrier films are available in a wide range of types in which each of them can be used for a different purpose, although it is mostly classified as food packaging. It can be found in the agricultural industry, sometimes in the food industry as well as freight forwarding services.

What Is The Difference Between Single And Multiple-Layer Silage Barriers?

It can be said that the multiple-layer silage barrier film is better than the single-layer silage film. However, the result might be different depends on the composition of the barrier film. The downside of a single-layer barrier film is; it cannot work for both water permeation and oxygen barrier. As a result, farmers usually have to add another layer to make it works for both, which means more cost that needs to be covered.

In the end, farmers choose to use multilayer Barrier Film because they can apply one film only for multipurpose functions so that they can save labor, energy, and money at the same time.

What Is The Construction Of A Multilayer Silage Barrier Film?

Different construction material on barrier film is used depending on its function. The materials added on barrier film must be resistant to water, oxygen, moisture: and if the barrier is used as food storage and wrapping additional barriers such as odor and oil barrier might be added.

The barrier structure is usually divided into three, including barrier layers, bulk layer, and adhesive layer. For the barrier layers, you might expect some of these EVOH, Polyesters (PET), Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), HDPE, PP, and Liquid crystal polymer (LCP). While PE, PP, Acrylates, EVA (low, medium, and high VA content), Polystyrene (PS), high impact PS (HIPS), general-purpose PS (GPPS) are added as a bulk barrier.

In addition, VLDPE (very low-density polyethylene), EVA, or EMA (ethyl methacrylate) blends with LLDPE, CoPP/Ter-PP, EVA, EMA, LLDPE, mLLDPE are also added for the adhesive layer.

What Are The Features Of Barrier Film?

The main features of the silage barrier film are pressure resistance and long durability. Because barrier film needs to keep the seeder or the fodder for a long period without reducing the quality of both seeder and fodder, if you want to have a total seal for the fodder, then you might probably require to purchase a high-quality barrier.

Medium and low barriers are accessible in the market, but the performance might not be as good as the high barrier. The level of barrier will determine the gas transmission rate of the barrier; the better the level, means less gas transmission.

If A High Barrier Film Is Better, Then Why Some People Use Low Barrier Film?

Since barrier film is not only used for the agricultural industry, some barriers might not be required to be completely sealed. For example, industries such as food, pharmacy, cigarette, chemical, and electronics might not need a high barrier seal because a low barrier can still maintain the quality as long as it can seal the product from the odor, flavor, air, oxygen, and moisture.

Another reason why a low barrier is recommended for these industries because their products already contain a preservative to control the quality of the product, although additional composition on the barrier film might require later on.

As for the agricultural industry, a high silage barrier film is a must because the fodder that is taken from greenery might easily spoil for a short period. The fodder is made from natural ingredients, and it needs to be kept without preservative of additional chemicals to avoid poisonous ingredients.

By using a high barrier, farmers can completely seal the fodder for a long period, so they can still maintain the quality and quantity of the fodder even during the harsh season.
